bariátrica Sleeve
Sleeve is one of the most widely used bariatric techniques today. This technique gives better results in patients with morbid obesity and co-morbidities, especially in terms of loss and reduction of other related health problems.
Also known as sleeve gastrectomy or gastric sleeve surgery, this procedure involves removing the left part of the stomach, which reduces the stomach’s ability to store food. This is a technique in which the stomach is converted into a tube with a capacity of 80 to 100 milliliters (ml), which is considered restrictive and metabolic.
After surgery, some patients lose 40% of their initial weight; this varies greatly from person to person. This percentage shows that the intervention can really change the quality of life of obese people.
For more than 20 years, the procedure has been highly effective in controlling hypertension and lipid diseases (cholesterol and triglycerides) as well as weight loss.
To achieve better results from the surgery, it is important for the patient to follow the instructions of their specialist and adopt new lifestyle habits after the intervention, such as regular physical activity and healthy eating.

How is it performed?
In order to have a tubal surgery, the patient must be under general anesthesia. As for the duration, the procedure normally takes about 2 hours.
After the intervention, the patient usually stays in the hospital for about 1 to 2 days, so that they can be followed and cared for immediately after surgery.
Most of the time this surgery is done through laparoscopy.In this surgical method, small holes are made in the patient’s abdomen through which tubes and other instruments are inserted, allowing minimal incisions to be made in the stomach.
One of the main advantages of this technique is that with videolaparoscopy there is no need to make a large incision in the skin.
During the procedure, the surgeon makes a vertical incision and removes the left part of the stomach, leaving the organ in the shape of a banana-like tube or shirt sleeve.
Since up to 85% of the stomach is removed during the intervention, the stomach becomes much smaller, the patient feels fuller, eats less and therefore loses weight.
Advantages of the Sleeve
Because it is a very advanced and modern surgical procedure that does not require large incisions, Sleeve has many advantages over other obesity techniques available today.
Among the main benefits are the following:
– The patient should drink about 50 to 150 ml (milliliters) of fluid per dose, instead of the usual standard of 1 l (liter) before surgery;
– The patient achieves greater weight loss compared to the results achieved with other techniques such as the adjustable gastric band and does not require band adjustment;
– It is possible to convert gastrectomy to Gastric Bypass if necessary;
– The intestine is not altered, thus preserving the normal absorption of essential nutrients;
– It is technically a simpler operation than a Bypass, allowing weight loss within a few years and with less risk of complications.
